"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21

Police Arrest Woman for DUI Collision Resulting in a Fatality
Written by: Officer Matt Bowman
On September 13, 2007, at 9:58 p.m., UCSB Police and EMS, CHP, Santa Barbara County Sheriff and Fire personnel were dispatched to a traffic collision on Highway 217 at the UCSB East Gate. Investigation of the collision showed that Julie Sankey had been driving a four-door sedan westbound on Hwy. 217. Her husband was a passenger in the vehicle. Both Sankeys are residents of Aiea, Hawaii and neither is affiliated with the university.
As Julie Sankey entered UCSB campus, she made an illegal U-turn attempting to drive back eastbound, resulting in her turning into the path of a motorcyclist traveling eastbound on Hwy. 217. The motorcycle collided with Sankey's vehicle, resulting in injuries to the motorcyclist, which were fatal. Neither Sankey was injured. It was determined that Julie Sankey was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. She was arrested and booked in the Santa Barbara County Jail for violation of California Vehicle Code 23153(a) - DUI with injury, and Penal Code 191.5(a) - Gross Vehicular Manslaughter While Intoxicated.
